Common warning signs

- Whining or growling noise from the front of the engine
- Power windows, radio or other electronics acting slow or strange

Battery or alternator?
A weak battery and a failing alternator can look the same: the car won't start. The difference is that the alternator charges the battery while the engine runs. If a fully charged or new battery keeps dying, the alternator is a prime suspect.
A simple check with a voltmeter
- Engine off: a healthy, charged battery reads about 12.4–12.6 volts.
- Engine running: a working charging system usually reads roughly 13.5–14.5 volts at the battery.
- Readings that stay near battery voltage with the engine running point to a charging problem.
Why we don't recommend pulling a battery cable
An old-school trick was to disconnect a battery cable with the engine running and see if it stalls. On modern vehicles that can cause a voltage spike that damages the voltage regulator or other electronics, so we use a meter and professional testing instead.
We replace alternators on site
Alternator replacement is one of our specialties. We test the whole charging system first, so you're not paying for a part you don't need.
