Signs the fob battery is getting weak
- You have to get closer to the car for it to lock or unlock
- You need to press buttons more than once
- A "key battery low" message on the dash
- It works sometimes and not others
Most fobs use a coin battery like a CR2032 or CR2025, but not all. Take the old battery with you to match it.
Getting in with a dead fob
Most modern fobs hide a metal backup key inside — look for a small release button or slide. Some cars hide the door keyhole under a small cap on the handle. Your owner's manual shows exactly where.
Starting a push-button car with a dead fob
Many push-to-start vehicles can still read a fob with a dead battery if it's held right up to the system. On a lot of cars you hold the fob directly against the start button and press; others have a marked spot in the console or a slot. Check your owner's manual for your vehicle.
New battery and it still doesn't work?
- Make sure it's the right battery and it's in the right way up
- Check for bent or loose battery contacts inside the fob
- Water damage or a hard drop can kill the fob's circuit board
- Some fobs lose their pairing and need to be reprogrammed to the vehicle
