How to Clean Car Seats, Cloth and Leather, the Right Way

Start the same way every time

  • Vacuum first, getting into the seams and cracks. Go gentle on leather.
  • Work from the top of the seat down so dirt doesn't fall on areas you've already cleaned.
  • Test any new cleaner on a hidden spot first.

Cloth seats

  • Pretreat tough stains and let the product sit briefly.
  • Lightly mist a mild upholstery cleaner and work it in with a soft brush in small circles.
  • Wipe away the residue with a damp microfiber towel.
  • Let the seats dry completely — windows cracked or a fan running.

The big mistake: too much water

Soaking a seat pushes water down into the foam, where it can't dry. That's where mildew and that musty smell you can't get rid of come from. Use just enough to dampen the surface.

Leather seats

  • Put a pH-balanced leather cleaner on a microfiber cloth — not straight on the seat — and wipe in small circles.
  • Condition the leather every few months to keep it from drying and cracking.
  • Skip bleach, ammonia, harsh degreasers and steam. They can strip, discolor or warp leather.
