When you turn the key or push the button, listen. What you hear narrows the problem down fast.
Rapid clicking
A fast click-click-click usually means not enough power is reaching the starter. Most often that's a weak or dead battery, or loose or corroded battery terminals. A jump-start often gets you going.
One single click
A single click and nothing else can be a dead battery or a failed starter. If a jump-start still gives you the same single click, the starter is the likely culprit.
No sound at all
Nothing at all — no click, no crank — points toward a completely dead battery, a bad battery connection, or a starter or ignition-circuit problem. Check whether your dash lights and headlights come on; that tells you whether there's power at all.
Cranks but won't start
If the engine turns over normally but won't fire up, your battery and starter are probably doing their job. The problem is usually fuel or spark: a failing fuel pump, worn spark plugs or weak ignition coils, a bad crank or cam sensor, or the anti-theft system not recognizing the key. Don't forget the simple one — make sure there's gas in the tank.
Don't keep cranking
Cranking over and over drains the battery and can overheat the starter. If it hasn't started after a few tries, stop and call.
