Northland winters don't mess around. These tips follow Minnesota Department of Public Safety winter guidance.
Keep your gas tank at least half full
It helps prevent gas line freeze — and if you get stuck, it's your heat.
What to keep in the car
- Ice scraper and snow brush
- Small shovel
- Jumper cables
- Tow chain or strap
- Sand or cat litter for traction
- Road flares
- Blanket, heavy boots and warm clothing
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- High-energy snacks like energy bars
- A phone charger
If you're stranded
- Stay with your vehicle. It's shelter and it's easier for rescuers to find than a person on foot.
- Run the engine for heat about once an hour — every half hour in extreme cold.
- Before you run it, make sure the tailpipe is clear of snow so carbon monoxide doesn't build up inside.
- Crack a window slightly while the engine runs.
- Tie something brightly colored to the antenna so you can be spotted.
- Keep naps short and keep moving to stay warm.
Before winter hits
Cold is hard on weak batteries, worn brakes and tired alternators. We can test your battery and charging system, check brakes and handle repairs at your home or work before you're stuck on the side of the road.
